He didnt decide to become a pilot because of consoling crowds, he is doing this for himself, for that feeling he feels deep deep down when he is all alone just him and his fighting plane. He writes this poem stating that he became an Airman because he needinessed to, not to delight someone, and that this war is nothing like a curse to him he loves what he does and are ok with the fact the he piece of tail die among the clouds above. 2.
